SPIT News - Issue 24, March 2001

We are delighted to welcome a new member to the SPIT executive committee: Nikki Young, of the National Theatre.

Nikki's work in theatre began when she worked for a year as an assistant in a Theatrical Agency before becoming Marketing and Publicity Assistant at the Tricycle Theatre and Cinema. She then spent one year as Assistant to the Head of the National Theatre's centre of research and development, The Studio.

Nikki was recently promoted internally and now works as Marketing Officer for the National. Access and the publicising of Sign Language Interpreted Performances comprise a large part of her job. Nikki is responsible for the promotion of SLIPs and Audio-described Performances and is a member of the National's Access Committee.

"My position as Marketing Officer at the National Theatre has stimulated me to develop my involvement and interest in SLIPs and I am delighted to become part of the SPIT executive. Ever since I started working in Theatre and on Sign Language Interpreted Performances, SPIT has been an important resource for me and I value this chance to work with and contribute ideas to the organisation."

English Touring Opera

Members of English Touring Opera (ETO) will be delivering workshops and sign language interpreted performances for deaf and hard of hearing people during their forthcoming Spring tour of Mozart's 'The Magic Flute'.

Each workshop will be led by an experienced Opera Director who will explore the story, themes and characters in detail and takes place on stage. This will be illustrated by various costumes and props from the production. Participants will learn about lighting and the set from the technical team, have the opportunity to experience sound production from a couple of the singers and a musician and to tour the set and backstage. The workshop and performance will be interpreted by Mary Connell.

Workshops take place from 2-5pm and participants are welcome to bring an escort. The cost is £12 per person, including refreshments, for the workshop and performance.

SHAPE UP!

For those of you who don't know, towards the end of last year, the Shape Ticket Scheme, won The Guardian Charity of the Year 2000 Award for excellence and innovation. Presented by The Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger at Sadler's Wells, the award recognises the work of smaller charities, which often goes unnoticed.

Shape runs a specialised booking service for London's disabled and older people, which enables their members to enjoy events throughout London, at discounted rates. In 1999/2000, Shape Ticket Scheme sold over 14,000 tickets to events ranging from opera, theatre, and concerts to West End musicals and pantomime.

Shape has since won a £29,204 Regional Arts Lottery Programme Award for a ground-breaking programme Deaf Eyes which will involve both deaf adults and children.

Deaf Eyes is an innovative programme which bridges the gap between science and arts, using research carried out at University College London and City University. The images used by brain scans of deaf people will be used as inspiration by the group of deaf artists. It will be run by deaf people, and the artists involved will communicate with their students in British Sign Language.

Deaf Eyes will provide:

  • training for Deaf people taught in British Sign Language to help them develop their artistic abilities
  • practical projects using sculpture and photography to encourage deaf people to create their own works of art
  • a public exhibition early this year of all the work done by the deaf people involved in the projects

John Wilson, Deaf Arts Officer said: "We are delighted the Lottery has awarded Shape Deaf Arts this funding. It will enable us to develop Deaf Eyes as an exciting new project involving lots of deaf people. The project will enable us to provide training and practical experience for deaf adults and children in British Sign Language. We know that for deaf people this is so much more effective than working with a sign language interpreter. All the participants will be able to relax and enjoy themselves while they are learning new skills."
